The Notebooks for Anna Magdalena Bach are two manuscript notebooks that Johann Sebastian Bach presented to his second wife, Anna Magdalena. The first one dates from 1722, and contains only works from J. S. Bach, while the second one, dating from 1725, is a compilation of music by both Bach and other composers of the era.
This G Major minuet was composed by the German Baroque composer Christian Petzold (1677-1733). During Bach’s lifetime, the piano did not exist yet. This recording is performed on the harpsichord, an instrument that is the predecessor of the piano. Listen carefully to how the performer slightly changes the melody on the repetition - that was a common practice in the Baroque period.
