Schubert composed 21 sonatas for piano. The last three ones, composed during his last year of life (1828) are major compositions for the instrument, and reflect his mature style. Schubert composed his Sonatas during a time where the Sonata genre was decaying. His pieces were not appreciated during his life-time, but later in the 20th century his compositions finally became recognized as master pieces.
